Blacktip Reef

National Aquarium

Completed: 2015
Designer: Cambridge Seven
Contractor: Whiting-Turner Construction

Located in the heart of the National Aquarium’s original facility, the Blacktip Reef is a focal point for 1.5 million visitors annually. The exhibit features new underwater viewing areas and a Pacific oceanic scene complete with a dynamic collection of corals, reefs, and aquatic animals. Cap Ex facilitated input from diverse teams within the National Aquarium to provide clear direction to the design team and guided procurement of the general contractor while addressing financial and multiple logistical limitations. Cap Ex also navigated a number of unique challenges during construction, such as the installation of a highly specialized glass wall shipped from Japan; quarantining of animals shipped from around the world; and the fabrication of over 3,000 individual coral components derived from Pacific habitats.
